Legislative Conference (Salon III)

9:00 am- 10:15 am ~ Addressing Latino Childhood Obesity: The Essential Role of Advocates

Sponsored by Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

U.S. obesity rates have risen at an alarming rate among children of all ages during the last 40 years, especially among children of minority descent. These statistics are of particular consequence for Latino children, who have been cited as having one of the highest rates of obesity and who represent the largest, youngest, and fastest-growing minority group in the nation. Addressing childhood obesity requires policy, environment and community-level changes targeting the needs of Latino youth. Panel participants will discuss how community advocates can be the catalysts to reduce and prevent childhood obesity by providing access to healthy foods, improving the environment to increase the availability of safe settings for physical activity, and engaging communities and policymakers.
