RESOLUTION 30: Latino Vote 2000


WHEREAS THE LEAGUE OF UNITED LATIN AMERICAN CITIZENS (LULAC) supports the purpose of fostering and enlarging the opportunities for training, education, civil rights, job opportunities, housing, economic development, and welfare of all Hispanics in the United States; and,

WHEREAS, LULAC has consistently urged all of its members and fellow Latinos throughout the United States to register and vote, and;

WHEREAS, LULAC has always collaborated with national Latino organizations in nonpartisan campaigns to register, educate, and get-out-the-vote, and;

WHEREAS, LULAC was a leader in the 1996 Latino Vote USA campaign in which Latino voter registration increased by 1.5 million and Latino voter turnout increased by 1 million new voters, and;

WHEREAS, LULAC remains committed to coalition building among national Latino organizations and on-going collaboration with voter registration groups, and;

WHEREAS, leaders of the Latino Vote USA campaign have expressed support for a nonpartisan Latino Vote 2000 campaign focusing on elections in 1998, 1999, and the year 2000, and;

WHEREAS, Latino Vote 2000 proposes to enlist the participation of 1,000 national and community based organizations, businesses, corporate groups, local trade unionist councils, local chapters of social, civic, educational and/or cultural organizations, churches, high school and college groups, media, etc. through its Partnerships for Democracy campaign, and;

WHEREAS, the Partnerships for Democracy campaign proposes to provide voter registration, voter education, get-out-the-vote materials and public service announcements to all participating groups and organizations, and;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the 1998 National Assembly convened in Dallas, Texas on the 4th day of July, 1998, pledges its full support for Latino Vote 2000 and urges all local LULAC chapters to join the Partnerships for Democracy campaign.
