RESOLUTION 13: Sierra Blanca


WHEREAS THE LEAGUE OF UNITED LATIN AMERICAN CITIZENS (LULAC) supports the purpose of fostering and enlarging the opportunities for training, education, civil rights, job opportunities, housing, economic development, and welfare of all Hispanics in the United States; and,

WHEREAS, LULAC accepts that it is not only the privilege, but the obligation of every member of this organization, to uphold and defend the rights and duties vested in every American Citizen, by the letter and spirit of the law of the land, and;

WHEREAS, LULAC is committed to exerting its efforts individually and cooperatively on behalf of those who need to help and protection of the league, and;

WHEREAS, LULAC understands that it must preserve and protect the natural resources of our great Nation while respecting the rights our friendly neighbors, and;

WHEREAS, environmental contamination recognizes no National boundaries, and;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the 1998 National Assembly convened in Dallas, Texas on the 4th day of July, 1998, support and coordinate efforts to prevent the development of a low-level, nuclear waste dump near Sierra Blanca, Texas, and the border between the United States of America and our sister, the United States of Mexico, and that LULAC will especially support the efforts by the Federal government of Mexico to prevent the development of any facilities for the storage of nuclear wastes or other environmentally harmful materials within 100 kilometers of the border of the United States of America and our sister, the United States of Mexico
