RESOLUTION 31: GI Bill


WHEREAS THE LEAGUE OF UNITED LATIN AMERICAN CITIZENS (LULAC) supports the purpose of fostering and enlarging the opportunities for training, education, civil rights, job opportunities, housing, economic development, and welfare of all Hispanics in the United States; and,

WHEREAS, the men and women who rendered service to the United States of America by enlistment in, and honorable discharge from, the armed forces that have protected our county, our freedom and our way of life, and;

WHEREAS, these men and women, our veterans, seek gainful employment and/or the pursuit of educational opportunities, and;

WHEREAS, Congress, in 1944, enacted the Servicemen's Readjustment Act, which included the GI Bill of Rights, which provided veterans with financial assistance to train to learn a new job, trade or profession and/or enroll in approved educational programs, and;

WHEREAS, current statistical evidence indicates that many veterans, who have earned these educational and employment benefits, have not availed themselves of these benefits, either through lack of knowledge, lack of a deep appreciation of the value of an education or a lack of awareness in the employer community about how on-the-job training programs can help the veterans become gainfully employed, and;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the 1998 National Assembly convened in Dallas, Texas on the 4th day of July, 1998, will endeavor the publicize and promote the educational benefits of the GI Bill for eligible veterans and encourage employers to provide on-the-job training opportunities for eligible veterans.

THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED will cite and commend employers who take exemplary actions to assist our veterans with on-the-job training opportunities.
