RESOLUTION 14: Military on Border

WHEREAS THE LEAGUE OF UNITED LATIN AMERICAN CITIZENS (LULAC) supports the purpose of fostering and enlarging the opportunities for training, education, civil rights, job opportunities, housing, economic development, and welfare of all Hispanics in the United States; and,

WHEREAS, the United States has recently approved two amendments to National legislation which affects the militarization of our nation's borders, and;

WHEREAS, these House amendments call for deploying military personnel along the border to stop the flow of drugs in addition to reducing the number of persons seeking to better their lives within these Untied States, and;

WHEREAS, LULAC should take the position that the placement of military troops along the southernmost international boundary of our nation negatively impacts the friendship relations with the country of Mexico, and;

WHEREAS, Americans should carefully examine the potentiality of the troops along the western, eastern, and southern seacoasts, the northern boundary line thereby essentially creating the possibility of troops protecting the perimeter of these United States, and;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the 1998 National Assembly convened in Dallas, Texas on the 4th day of July, 1998, take a position against any placement of military troops along the border in any part of our country, and that LULAC notifies members of Congress and Clinton Administration of its position and expresses its displeasure in such actions.

Approved this 4th day of July, 1998.

Rick Dovalina
LULAC National President
