Resolution - :TO SUPPORT THE NATIONAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATION’S PRIORITY SCHOOL’S CAMPAIGN

WHEREAS, LULAC is our nation’s oldest and largest Hispanic civil rights organization addressing education, employment and civil rights issues in the United States of America since 1929; and

WHEREAS, the Obama Administration has made low performing schools a national priority and will support initiatives in schools that have the greatest need and demonstrate the strongest commitment to significantly raise the achievement of their students; and

WHEREAS, the National Education Association (NEA) and its 3.2 million members are committed to transforming the nation’s persistently low-performing, priority schools into great public schools for all students; and

WHEREAS, NEA’s Priority Schools Campaign rests on an evidence-based set of measures that increase student achievement and increases high school graduation. This includes:

• A strong partnership between the school and the students’ families;
• An investment in increasing the skills and effectiveness of the school safe;
• Community-provided social and health services for students and their families; and
• District/union collaboration

WHEREAS, the mission of the League of United Latin American Citizens is to advance the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, housing, health and civil rights of the Hispanic population of the United States.

WHEREAS, public schools serving Latino students can be significantly strengthened by organizations like LULAC and the NEA working together to create ideal conditions for teaching and learning which will result in academic success for Latino students.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the League of United Latin American Citizens will continue to fully and actively supports the NEA Priority Schools Campaign and urges its members to work with students and their parents, teachers and communities to turn these schools around.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, LULAC and NEA will collaborate to create a great public school for every child.
