Resolution - Supporting Comprehensive Immigration Reform.

WHEREAS, The League of united Latin American Citizens is the nation’s oldest and largest Latino Organization, founded in Corpus Christi, Texas on February 17, 1929; and
 
WHEREAS, throughout its history has committed itself to the principles that Latinos have equal access to the opportunities in employment, education, housing and health care; and
 
WHEREAS, LULAC believes in the democratic principles of individual political and religious freedom, the right of equality of social economic opportunity, and in the cooperative endeavor toward the development of an American society wherein the cultural resources, integrity and dignity of every individual and group constitute basic assets of the American way of life; and
 
WHEREAS, we believe that as American citizens we must assume our duties and responsibilities and assert our rights and privileges in pursuit of a fuller and richer civilization for our country; and
 
WHEREAS, the topics of immigration reform, border security, and Federal/ State/ local cooperation on immigration concerns are of great importance; and
 
WHEREAS, immigrants have demonstrated their patriotism through their service in defending this country in military duty and Hispanics have received the highest proportion of Medals of Honor and Purple Hearts than any other ethnic group; and
 
WHEREAS, immigrants arrive in the United States with little or no money, look different and speak a foreign language, come with an entrepreneurial spirit and desire to live to American Dream; and
 
WHEREAS, law enforcement shall treat immigrants with dignity and respect, upholding and respecting the human rights and dignity of immigrants and their families; and
 
WHEREAS, walls erected to divide peoples and nations are symbols of failed and repressive efforts to thwart human freedom and prosperity; and
 
Now THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the National League of United Latin American Citizens support comprehensive immigration reform that will provide protection of human and civil rights of both citizens and non-citizens being detained support the use of new technologies to match up foreign workers with jobs in this country that are going unfilled, elimination of current obstacles to legalization that have resulted in 10-12 million undocumented residents living in the shadows.
