Resolution - Health Reform in America
Whereas, The New Mexico LULAC State Convention fully support President
Obama’s vision of a new era of responsibility in our country – a vision in
which we “lay a new foundation of growth upon which we can renew the promise
of America.”
Whereas, The New Mexico LULAC State Convention support the health quality
for America 2020 Campaign to promote with LULAC the redesign of our broken
health care system so that it is responsible and responsive for quality
health care to all in America.
Whereas, It is protected by the United States Census Bureau that by
the year 2020, approximately 40% of the U.S. population will be composed,
collectively, of racial/ethnic population groups that are classified as
minority; by 2050 these groups will constitute 50% of the population.
Whereas, Chronic disease account for 7 in 10 deaths in the U.S., killing
more than 1.7 million Americans every year and costing more than $.75 of
every dollar spent on health care in the U.S.
Whereas, Approximately 47 million people are uninsured, underinsured and 2/3
are working people who make 200% less than the federal poverty level – 1/3
of Latinos.
Whereas, 133 million Americans – 45% of the population have at least one
chronic disease.
Whereas, It is a time for action in our country for health care reform and
let our elected leaders and candidates for elected office – work to make
this issue of the uninsured a priority to guarantee quality, affordable
health care for everyone.
Therefore be it resolved that this New Mexico State LULAC Convention May 2,
2009 go on record supporting this aggressive grassroots movement campaign
supporting comprehensive health care reform now.
Approved this 18th day of July 2009.
Rosa Rosales
LULAC National President
