Resolution - April 6 to be Recognized as a Texas Holiday
WHEREAS, on April 6, 1813, about 1,000 Tejanos, alongside many Anglos and
native Indians, fought in the Battle of Medina, the first major battle for
Texas Independence; and,
WHEREAS, on this date, under the leadership of Bernando Gutierrez de Lara,
the Tejano community of Texas declared Texas to be a free and independent
republic; and,
WHEREAS, these efforts led, for a brief time, to the founding of the first
republic of Texas; and,
WHEREAS, that state of Texas does not currently recognize this historical
fact;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that LULAC call upon the Texas Legislature to
adopt legislation to declare April 6 as an official state holiday.
