Resolution - Democracy for Puerto Rico
WHEREAS, Puerto Rico has been a colony of the United
States for over 110 years.
WHEREAS, Its residents, U.S. citizens, have been unjustly
denied full enfranchisement as specified by the U.S.
Constitution.
WHEREAS, LULAC has a strong commitment to the universal
enfranchisement of Hispanic Americans.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that LULAC urges Congress to
legislate a process of self- determination to resolve the
political status of the territory of Puerto Rico, whereby
the U.S. citizens of Puerto Rico would be asked to choose
between non-colonial status options permissible under the
U.S. Constitution. Should the option of statehood be
favored, LULAC shall strongly support the admission of
Puerto Rico as a state of the Union with the same privileges
and responsibilities.
Approved this 18th day of July 2009.
