Resolution - Opposing the Death Penalty

WHEREAS, the legislative platform of LULAC advocates reform of the criminal justice system because of the disproportionate number of Latinos incarcerated; and
 
WHEREAS, LULAC supports reform of the court system because of the prevalence of discrimination in the sentencing guidelines based on race or socio-economic status; and
 
WHEREAS, LULAC supports legislation to redress disparate treatment of minorities in the United States, such as the elimination of the death penalty; and
 
WHEREAS, the United States is one of the few industrialized nations in the world that has a death penalty; and
 
WHEREAS, there is a campaign to end the death penalty by civil rights and faith based organizations in the United States; and
 
WHEREAS, the California LULAC Convention, held on June, 2009, supports an end to the death penalty in the nation;
 
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the 80th LULAC National Convention that LULAC opposes the death penalty.
