Resolution
Workers Rights WHEREAS, the
League of United Latin American Citizens is
convened in Chicago, IL for its 78th annual
convention and exposition to reaffirm the
mission of LULAC nationwide; and
WHEREAS, the mission of the
League of United Latin American Citizens is to
advance the economic condition, educational
attainment, political influence, health and
civil rights of the Hispanic population of the
United States; and
WHEREAS, a majority of workers
employed in Southern California by Grocery
Supermarket retailers Von’s (Safeway),
Albertsons, and Ralphs (Kroger) are Hispanic;
and
WHEREAS, a previous organized
lockout of employees three years ago by the
above listed retailers resulted in serious
family hardship, loss of homes, loss of
vehicles, significant and increased family debt,
and displacement; and
WHEREAS, the purchasing power
of Hispanics is estimated more than $1.5 billion
annually;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT
RESOLVED, this 14th day o July 2007 that members
of LULAC throughout the United States and Puerto
Rico give their full support to these workers
and their families and urge the named retailers
in LULAC communities to exercise caution and
restraint during current labor contract
negotiations when decisions are made which may
impact the well being of families.
