Resolution
WHEREAS, on March 24,2005, in Los Angeles, California
the nation's largest television market, KTLA TV,
a television station owned by The Tribune Company
a news report entitled "3 Axed in Sex Scandal"
dealing with the firings of three employees at NBC TV, and
WHEREAS, within their report, the station showed video, not of the people who were
fired, but instead decided to show a well known Los Angeles NBC Hispanic television
News Anchor NOT involved in the scandal in any
way; and
WHEREAS, KTLA and The Tribune Company
could have shown non-Hispanic News
Anchors who comprise the prime news team at NBC TV in Los Angeles, but decided
to
show a well-known Hispanic; and
WHEREAS, in recklessly showing this
inaccurate portrayal of this respected Hispanic
news personality seen by millions of television viewers. KTLA and The Tribune
Company caused enormous damage to him personally
as well as to the Hispanic community;
NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved
that LULAC strongly condemns the disparaging
actions of KTLA TV and The Tribune Company which it willfully took against the
Hispanic News Anchor and by extension the Hispanic community; and
BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED that LULAC demands that KTLA and The Tribune
Company
take immediate action to fully
resolve this matter including the damages caused
by its
negligence to the Hispanic News Anchor and the Hispanic Community; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that LULAC demands that KTLA
and The Tribune
Company take immediate actions to improve its hiring, treatment and promotion of
Hispanic News Reporters, Anchors, Producers, and
News Managers"; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that
LULAC demands that KTLA and The Tribune
Company take immediate actions to establish an educational Scholarship fund for
Hispanic students who seek
a career in broadcast communications.
This resolution voted upon and
passed by the National Membership of The League
of
United Latin American Citizens LULAC, meeting at their 76th Annual National
Convention in Little Rock, Arkansas on this date.
