Supporting the Memory of Dennis Ray Garza

WHEREAS, DENNIS RAY GARZA the President of LULAC Council No. 650 of Austin Texas passed away on March 29, 2004 after a lengthy illness at the age of 42; and  

WHEREAS, DENNIS RAY GARZA was a member in good standing of LULAC since 1979, when he first joined LULAC Council No.1 in Corpus Christi, Texas his home town; and  

WHEREAS, DENNIS RAY GARZA served as Special Assistant to the National President of LULAC under Presidents Ruben Bonilla, Jr. and Tony Bonilla from 1979 to 1983; and  

WHEREAS, DENNIS RAY GARZA joined LULAC membership in Lubbock, Texas while he attended Texas Tech University where he graduated in 1983; and  

WHEREAS, DENNIS RAY GARZA joined LULAC Council No.650 after receiving a law degree from the University of Texas School of Law and going to work for the Attorney General of Texas; and  

WHEREAS, DENNIS RAY GARZA while President of LULAC Council No.650 was outspoken on controversial issues affecting Hispanic students in the Austin Independent School District, including single-member school districts, the elimination of specials stipends for bilingual education teachers, the proposed (and rejected) reporting of undocumented students to the INS and the selection of a Hispanic school administrator as school district superintendent; and  

WHEREAS, DENNIS RAY GARZA while President of LULAC Council No. 650 was also outspoken on other vital issues affecting the Hispanic community of Austin including the cases of police brutality and the successful retention of the controversial Austin Police Department’s Hispanic Crimes Unit; and

WHEREAS, DENNIS RAY GARZA was very active in other community organizations, including the Austin/Travis County Youth Services, Inc. the capital Metro Board and the Attorney General’s Hispanic Employees Association of Texas; and  

WHEREAS, DENNIS RAY GARZA set an example for others through his involvement in the political process, both partisan and nonpartisan, both local and national, especially through his membership and participation in South Austin Mexican American Democrats’ voter registration and voter turnout drives. 

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that LULAC at its 2004 state convention honor the memory and life-time achievements of our dearly departed member, Dennis Ray Garza.
