Resolution
To Support the Right to Vote
in Non-partisan Elections for Legal Permanent
Residents in California
WHEREAS:
-
Immigrant children
comprise a significant population in the
California schools; and,
-
Immigrant parents who are
legal permanent residents who have ideas and
solutions regarding the education concerns n
the community have their suggestions
dismissed during public imput sessions by
local elected officials since they do not
vote; and,
-
as students we have
learned that taxation without representation
is tyranny; and,
-
voting in non-partisan
elections at the local level promotes
participatory democracy, and a better
understanding of the political process; and,
-
it establishes a voting
pattern routine that enables the individual
to become comfortable with the voting
process for state and federal elections when
they become citizens.
NOW
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
The
“Monterrey” Council asks for support from
District XII and CA LULAC State Convention
delegates to seek support from the locally
elected non-partisan officials to achieve the
required support from the legislature to enact
appropriate legislation to enable the legal
permanent resident to vote in non-partisan
elections at the local level in order to:
-
promote participatory
democracy; and,
-
infuse the electorate with
newly created enthusiastic voters; and,
-
assure that a diversity of
ideas and opinions form legal permanent
residents are included in the problem solved
sessions of elected bodies that hold
non-partisan positions; and,
-
enable the legal permanent
resident the ability to vote for candidate
for their choice; and,
-
empower a disenfranchised
community who will become the future voters
and citizens in the best experiment
regarding participatory democracy in the
world.
