LULAC Higher Education
Resolution
WHEREAS, it is of utmost
importance that LULAC take steps toward
assisting Latinos students with their higher
education needs; and
WHEREAS, it is
especially important that Latino families get
access to information by creating college career
centers, which give parents and students
financial aid and scholarship information,
college eligibility requirements, degree
orientation, and provide parents and students
with information on their legal rights and
responsibilities in the schools; and
WHEREAS,
disseminating information to parents and
students can be facilitated by creating a
“college bound” website; and
WHEREAS, part of
the creation of these college career centers,
LULAC should provide special programs that can
help with retention Latinos in college, such as
providing students with academic support and
creating a role model program; and
WHEREAS,
creating a role model program can be attained by
developing a directory of LULAC volunteers; and
WHEREAS, part of
this role model program should also consist of
creating a mentoring program for aspiring
student that want to become educators and
administrators at the higher education level;
and
WHEREAS, there
should also be a national tracking mechanism for
the number of Latino students that graduate from
a four year institution; and
WHEREAS, higher
education institutions should be hold more
accountable for at risk students that are in
danger of not graduating; and
WHEREAS, LULAC
should demand that higher education institutions
facilitate the transferring process from high
school to college for Latino students by
creating transferring programs specifically
designed for Latinos that can act as a bridge;
THEREFORE, BE IT
RESOLVED, that LULAC take action on
these higher education initiatives proposed
