Driver’s Licenses for All Californians
 

WHEREAS, California Senator Gill Cedillo has worked tirelessly for the last five year to enact legislation that will provide increased safety to California driver and pedestrians by licensing all motorists; and  

WHEREAS, Senator Cedillo has previously authored SB 60 which was approved by the state legislature and signed into law by former Governor Gray Davis; and  

WHEREAS, Senator Cedillo has been working closely with the Governor to draft a new legislative bill, SB 1160 that addresses the Governor’s concerns on security and that all drivers on California’s public roads be properly trained, tested and fully insured; and  

WHEREAS, SB 1160 contains key elements such as the application process is open to all motorists (citizens and non-citizens) licenses will be uniform and the same for all motorists, bearing no differing markings or distinctions, and that the bill will carry an urgency clause to be effective immediately upon the signature of the Governor; and  

WHEREAS, it is recognizing that driver’s license is the primary method by which Californians can be assured that each motorist is aware of the rules of the road and competent to drive upon them; and  

WHEREAS, with the approval of SB 1160, every California driver will be able to apply for a driver’s license regardless of his or her immigration status; and  

WHEREAS, SB 1160 will enable all hard working, taxpaying California residents who must rely on an automobile for work and family related duties to be tested by the Department of Motor Vehicles; and  

BE IT RESOLVED THAT, the League of United Latin American Citizens Orange County District 1 is firmly in support of SB 1160 for approval by the State Assembly, the State Senate and for the bill to receive the Governor’s signature for approval.
