Resolution in Support of
AGJobs Bill SB 1645
WHEREAS, many of the farm
workers in the U.S., who pick the food that we
eat 3 times a day, are undocumented, Mexican
nationals, and contribute to both the U.S. and
Mexican economy; and
WHEREAS, recent
raids and intimidation in California rural and
urban communities by U.S. immigration
authorities are causing farm workers and other
Latinos to be afraid to leave their homes or
take their children to school because they are
being questioned and arrested because of their
skin color; and
WHEREAS these
actions by Immigration authorities spotlight the
need for passing a bill to legalize farm
workers, which is the first stop to legalize
undocumented residents in the U.S.; and
WHEREAS, a
bipartisan bill, SB 1645, is a compromising bill
that is endorsed by major agribusiness groups,
farm labor organizations including the United
Farm Workers, the AFL-CIO and Hispanic Civil
Rights organizations like LULAC< the National
Council de la Raza and others; and
WHEREAS, the
bill would allow undocumented farm workers to
earn the legal right to permanently stay in this
country by continuing to work in agriculture.
THEREFORE BE IT
RESOLVED, that delegates to the National
LULAC Convention being held on July 9 -11, 2004,
in San Antonio, Texas, endorse this legislation,
and call on all Representatives in the U.S.
Congress and U.S. Senators to vote yes on SB
1645,
