Resolution
LULAC National Women
Convention Committee
WHEREAS,
Hispanic women are disproportionately affected
by pay inequity earning only 52 cents per every
dollar earned by man, and Hispanic women are
three times more likely to live in poverty than
non-Hispanic women and;
WHEREAS,
Young Hispanic women have a higher school
dropout and teenage pregnancy rate than any
other ethnic group in the United States, and
education and training programs are not readily
available to Hispanic women to break through the
barriers of “glass-ceilings” and “glass-walls”
in private and public employment sectors and;
WHEREAS,
Hispanic women still face serious challenges
with domestic violence at home and sexual
harassment at the workplace and;
WHEREAS,
An incredible number of working Hispanic women
lack the benefits necessary to maintain a
healthy life for themselves and their children,
and the high rates of cervical and breast cancer
among Hispanic women are increasing as a
consequence, Hispanic women have less access to
preventive medical testing and;
WHEREAS,
LULAC is committed to assist women to empower
themselves and become leaders in their
communities through education, mentoring, and
practical tools for self-advancements, and LULAC
is committed to foster influential relationships
at a national level to better the lives of
Hispanic women and their families.
NOW THEREFORE, BE
IT RESOLVED,
NWA council 754 met in Rogers, AR on April 17,
2003 and voted unanimously to recommend this
Resolution for the adoption by the entire League
of United Latin American Citizens at the 2003
National Convention in Orlando, Florida:
“LULAC National
establish a “LULAC National Women Convention
Committee” on a yearly basis, to include staff
and LULAC leadership across the country, to be
presided by the National VP of Women.
Furthermore, let it be resolved that the
convention be held during March, National
Women’s Month and receives corporate funding
through LULAC National Programs in a systematic
effort to support women’s issues”
