Resolution
Ohio Driver’s License
WHEREAS,
LULAC is the oldest Hispanic organization
promoting civil rights for all Hispanics in the
United States, and;
WHEREAS,
states
such as Ohio require social security numbers in
order to obtain a valid driver’s license and
millions of Hispanic immigrants are unable to
obtain a driver’s license in such states as
Ohio, and;
WHEREAS,
the inability to obtain licenses has not only
created tremendous hardship to these workers,
but also creates safety problems because
millions of people are forced to drive to work,
without the ability to obtain a valid driver’s
license along with automobile insurance, and
WHEREAS,
our government has no way of assessing the
ability or the comprehension of the law for
drivers without valid licenses and there is no
documentation for the identity of said drivers,
and;
WHEREAS,
such states as Michigan and Tennessee have
expanded their lists to include other legal
documents in place of social security cards and
legislation is pending in a number of other
states to do likewise, and;
WHEREAS,
immigrants are hard working people whose work
skills and work ethics are needed for our great
nation. Without this vital workforce, our
nation would come to a virtual standstill in
numerous areas which include but are not limited
to: agriculture and service industry jobs.
These Latinos need to drive in order to work.
NOW THEREFORE BE
IT RESOLVED,
the League of United Latin American Citizens,
requests that all states expand the list of
eligible documents for obtaining a valid
driver’s license for Hispanics from Latin
countries residing in the United States to
include such documents as: passports form the
country of issue, school registration cards,
military cards, and other recognized government
documents from the country of origin, when the
person does not yet have a social security
card.
BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED,
that we believe
expanding the list of documents in order to
obtain a driver’s license in all our states is ,
in reality, a win-win situation for all of us
Americans in making this nation a safer place to
live and to work.
