Resolution
Honoring the late D. Cleotilde
Garcia
WHEREAS,
Dr. Cleotilde Garcia died this past week in
Corpus Christi, leaving an impressive legacy as
a leader in the Mexican American community for
some 50 years and;
WHEREAS,
Dr. Cleotilde Garcia, born in the Mexican State
of Tamaulipas the fourth of 10 children, was one
of the first Mexican American women to receive a
Medical Degree from the University of Texas
Medical Branch at Galveston in 1053, being
honored by the faculty as “outstanding student,”
and;
WHEREAS,
Dr. Cleotilde Garcia delayed starting medical
school and first worked as a teacher to put her
young brother, the late Dr. Hector Garcia,
through Medical School and;
WHEREAS,
Dr. Cleotide Garcia opened a medical practice in
Corpus Christi serving poor Mexican Americans,
delivering babies and providing to service to
countless families unable to pay for the service
and;
WHEREAS,
Dr. Cleotilde Garcia, along with her brother Dr.
Hector Garcia, engaged in a lifelong fight for
civil rights and dignity for Mexican Americans
including the establishment of the American
G.I. Forum, advocating for the rights of
Mexican American veterans and;
WHEREAS,
Dr, Cleotilde Garcia helped to break down
barriers to Mexican American advancement and
provided a role model to countless young
Latinas.
NOW THEREFORE, BE
IT RESOLVED,
that Texas State LULAC take a moment of prayer
for the response of the soul of a great
American, Dr. Cleotilde Garcia and;
BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED,
that LULAC honors
the person and the accomplishments of Dr.
Cleotilde Garcia in making this State and this
Country a better place to live for Mexican
Americans and all others who seek the American
Dream.
