Arizona Redistricting

RESOLUTION SUMMARY: LULAC accept the congressional district boundaries as fair and justifiably representing the Latino Community and that LULAC not accept the legislative district boundaries and urge that these proposed boundaries be redrawn to be more politically competitive….

WHEREAS, The League of United Latin American Citizens supports the purpose of fostering and enlarging the opportunities for training, education, civil rights, job opportunities, housing, economic development and welfare of all Hispanic citizens of the United States; and

WHEREAS, a new redistricting process was approved by popular state vote and a redistricting board was created to develop political district boundaries for Arizona and,

WHEREAS, LULAC joined with the Latino community to support the process and urged the creation & maximization of Latino districts and,

WHEREAS, the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission created and approved a set of congressional and state legislative district boundaries

WHEREAS, Arizona LULAC accepted the Congressional District Boundaries as fair and justifiable representing the Latino community but did not accept the state legislative district boundaries and urges that these proposed boundaries be redrawn to be more politically competitive.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, at the 73rd LULAC National Convention convened in Houston, TX on June 23-29, 2002, that the national membership join and support Arizona LULAC in accepting congressional district boundaries and the they continue to support Arizona LULAC in the redrawing of the state legislative districts.
