WHEREAS, The League of United Latin American Citizens supports the purpose of fostering and enlarging the opportunities for training, education, civil rights, job opportunities, housing, economic development and welfare of all Hispanic citizens of the United States; and
WHEREAS, in the past, illegal, immigrant "roundups" have occurred in Arizona by local, state & national authorities and,
WHEREAS, this "roundup" mentality has not stopped and,
WHEREAS, the latest example is the immigrant "roundup" at Sky Harbor Airport during the latter weeks of April 2002 in the name of "Homeland Security" and
WHEREAS, the "rounded up" individuals had been employed at Sky Harbor Airport for years and were taxpaying residents and now in the name of "homeland security" these individuals will be deported and prosecuted for so-called "fraudulent" social security cards and,
WHEREAS, no repercussions will be filed versus the employer or employers of these so-called violators and,
WHEREAS, this resolution was passed by its membership at the Arizona State Convention on May 5, 2002, in Phoenix, AZ,
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, The League of United Latin American
Citizens (LULAC) joins with Arizona LULAC in condemning all "roundups."
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that LULAC is requesting that all affected
employers at Sky Harbor Airport be prosecuted to the fullest extent
possible under the law for their failed hiring practices.
