RESOLUTION

Supporting the Legal Use of Under God in the Pledge of Allegiance

WHEREAS, the League of United Latin American Citizens advances the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, health and civil rights of the Hispanic Community of the United States; and

WHEREAS, the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States has been recited at the beginning of every LULAC meeting from the local to the national levels since the organization's founding in 1929; and

WHEREAS, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals erroneously ruled on June 26 that reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools is an unconstitutional "endorsement of religion" because of the phrase "under God" in the pledge,

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the League of United Latin American Citizens supports the continued use of the phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance and encourages the Justice Department and Congress to overturn the decision.

Approved this 29th day of June, 2002.

Hector M. Flores
LULAC National President
