Support Redistricting Efforts at All Levels of Government

WHEREAS, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the oldest and largest civic organization in this Nation, established in 1929 to uphold and defend the rights and duties vested in every American citizen by the letter and spirit of the law of the land; and

WHEREAS, LULAC holds a firm belief in our democratic government, an American society whereas in the cultural resources, integrity and dignity of every individual and group constitute basic assets of the American way of life; and

WHEREAS, according to the newly elected census data for 2000, the Hispanic population has grown in vast proportions that merit new redistricting in our country; and

WHEREAS, the Latino community and in particular the Mexican American community has suffered substantial lack of representation in our government;

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that LULAC's voice resound in opposing acts that threaten the physical and spiritual welfare of individuals of this country by discriminatory districts which will continue to deny equal representation to the Hispanic population of the United States;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that LULAC National take the vigorous lead in every way possible to encourage and obtain support in our efforts from all other organizations that service the Latino community, including among them MALDEF, in order to achieve redistricting that will advance the opportunity for all in our community to allow a fair and equitable representation at all political subdivisions.
