May 19, 2009 For more information contact: Washington, DC -The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the largest and oldest Hispanic civil rights organization in the country, applauds the nomination of a successful Latina California businesswoman Rosa "Rosie" Gumatao Rios to the post of United States Treasurer. “Her appointment demonstrates the commitment of President Barack Obama to bring diversity to his administration, and we remain hopeful other Hispanics will follow in her footsteps and help shape our nation and get our economy back on track," said LULAC National President Rosa Rosales. “President Obama during this time of economic hardship brings a qualified Mexican-American woman who has the vast experience and knowledge to move this country forward.” As U.S. Treasurer, Ms. Rios will be charged with oversight of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the United States Mint, and the United States Savings Bond Division. Her name will become familiar to most Americans after she is confirmed, as her signature will appear on paper U.S. currency printed during her tenure. Prior to joining MacFarlane Partners, she was a Principal at Red River Associates, a consulting firm specializing in providing development, project management and executive management services for municipalities. She also served as the the Director of the Redevelopment and Economic Development for the City of Oakland. Managing a staff of nearly 100 people, she led the efforts of the two departments to facilitate development and business opportunities within Oakland as well as revitalize the city's downtown and neighborhood corridors. Additionally, she currently serves as a Trustee of the Alameda County (CA) Employees' Retirement Association (ACERA) and is a board member of the California Association of Local Economic Development (CALED) and the Fruitvale Spanish-Speaking Unity Council, which serves the families of the Fruitvale District in the City of Oakland. Rios received her Bachelor's degree in sociology and romance languages and literature from Harvard University. She is also a Fellow with the Royal Society for the Arts.
