March 27, 2009 For more information contact: Washington, DC - The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the oldest and largest Hispanic civil rights organization in the country, commends President Obama for the nomination of John Trasviña as Assistant Secretary of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). “LULAC has worked alongslide John Trasviña as President and General Council of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) for many years on issues of the upmost importance to the Latino community,” said LULAC National President Rosa Rosales. “Mr. Trasviña has spent his life as an incredible advocate for the Latino community and demonstrated a commitment to justice and equal protection for all under the law.” Trasviña has federal experience working for President Clinton in 1997 as Special Counsel for Immigration Related Unfair Employment Practices and shown leadership in the Hispanic community as the Chair of the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA). Working with MALDEF and NHLA, Trasviña has led the charge to ensure equal treatment under the law for Latinos in a variety of arenas covering housing, health, economic empowerment, education, and civil rights. Given the huge challenges with the current housing market, it is important to have someone of this high caliber at HUD to enforce non-discrimination laws to protect all Americans. Trasviña brings education, work experience, and community involvement to the protection of civil rights.
