Washington, DC – The League of United Latin American Citizens, the
largest and oldest Hispanic civil rights organization in the country,
applauds the Senate Judiciary Committee for voting in favor of Judge
Sotomayor’s confirmation.
“We want to applaud the Senate Judiciary Committee for the vote today,” said
LULAC National President Rosa Rosales. “This is a great day in the history
of the United States. This is the first Latina ever on the Supreme Court.
She serves as a great role model and will have a tremendous impact on
Latinas and women across the nation. In America, all things are possible.”
Almost 2,000 people attended hearings in the Senate Judiciary Committee
hearing room and millions more saw it, read about it and listened to it.
President Obama was right when he said she will bring experience and wisdom
accumulated during all her years of hard work.
Judge Sotomayor received the highest rating from the American Bar
Association. She has the temperament for the job. She has more federal
judicial experience than anyone nominated to the court in the last 100
years. Judge Sotomayor’s 17-year judicial record demonstrates that she has
been able to listen with an open mind and has worked in a bipartisan
fashion. She cautiously reviews and follows precedents as justice requires.
LULAC’s National Assembly adopted a national resolution in favor of her
nomination and held a watch party for Sotomayor during the LULAC National
Convention in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The League of United Latin American Citizens advances the economic
condition, educational attainment, political influence, housing, health and
civil rights of Hispanic Americans through community-based programs
operating at more than 700 LULAC councils nationwide.
