The winner of the MillerCoors Lideres program will be determined by a national online election process. The winner will be featured as "Lider of the Year" and the non-profit organization that the nominee represents will receive a $25,000 grant to work on a community leadership project with MillerCoors. “My wife and I have been members of LULAC since 1983, and we have strived to reach the goals of National LULAC which are, Leadership, Education, Community Service, and Cultural Pride,” said Dr. Roberto Cordova. “One of the most important messages given to us by our LULAC forefathers is that we Latina/os, and our culture are bright, brave, and beautiful. We are life-long educators and we strongly belief in promoting the skills and the talents of our Latino youth.” Roberto is a retired professor emeritus from the University of Northern Colorado as well as a retired major from the U.S. Army. Betty is a retired Greeley Central High School counselor. Team Córdova are proud to be a part of the group of chosen leaders by MillerCoors. “The 2008 Lideres featured in the print ads are a diverse group of respected community leaders and MillerCoors is proud to highlight their achievements. They serve as an inspiration and an example of what one person’s dedication can accomplish,” Joedis Avila, Multicultural Relations Manager for MillerCoors, said. “We are committed to facilitating the development of Latino leaders by providing leadership tools that benefit the Hispanic community.” Avila noted that the Líderes program supports national and local leaders within the Hispanic community and provides leadership tools such as scholarships, training, sponsorships and economic development that foster the development and advancement of all communities, in particular the U.S. Latino community. Dr. Roberto and Betty Córdova have co-initiated and co-founded initiatives with the help and support of other Latino and Latina community members, including the Candelaria Association and the Greeley LULAC chapter #30005. Team Córdova has also co-initiated and spearheaded several LULAC projects in Greeley. They have organized 30 LULAC Youth Councils in middle, junior high and high schools in Northern Colorado as well as annual events. They also created the Greeley LULAC Scholarship Program, which has awarded more than $200,000 to over 300 Latino college-bound students and they started the Greeley LULAC El Voto Latino, which registers eligible Latinos that are U.S. citizens in Weld County to vote and encourages them to go to the polls. The League of United Latin American Citizens advances the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, health and civil rights of Hispanic Americans through community-based programs operating at more than 700 LULAC councils nationwide.
