Washington, DC - The League of
United Latin American Citizens applauds the
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid for bringing
an immigration bill to the Senate floor for
debate which is set to begin on Monday. The
Senator is moving forward with his deadline to
ensure Congress will have enough time to pass
comprehensive immigration reform this year.
“We applaud the Majority
Leader Reid’s decision to introduce last year’s
bill to get the ball rolling on immigration
reform in the Senate. There are a number of
provisions in the bill that we want to see
fixed, but there will be ample opportunity for
Senators to make favorable changes through
amendments and in the conference process,” said
LULAC National President Rosa Rosales. “We need
comprehensive immigration reform that
strengthens our security while creating a
pathway for hard working immigrants to legalize
their status, reuniting families and allowing
future workers to come to the United Sates
legally.”
LULAC urges Congress to pass
comprehensive immigration reform that ensures
border security, reunites families, provides
smart workplace employment measures, strengthens
our economy and brings the approximately 12
million undocumented people out of the shadows.
As we move forward, we expect
Congress to live up to the highest ideals of our
American democracy by providing hard working
immigrants with the same opportunities that our
nation provided to their ancestors when they
came to the United States. We are a nation
founded and strengthened by immigrants and we
must continue to pursue the enlightened
immigration policies that have made our nation
the leader of the free world.
The overwhelming majority of
Americans want to reform our broken immigration
system. A recent USA Today and Gallup poll asked
if undocumented immigrants should be given a
chance to gain citizenship. Seventy-eight
percent favored a path to citizenship. And a
poll by the National Immigration Forum and the
Manhattan Institute showed that seventy-five
percent of likely voters nationwide support
comprehensive immigration reform.
The League of United Latin
American Citizens, the oldest and largest
Hispanic membership organization in the country,
advances the economic conditions, educational
attainment, political influence, health and
civil rights of Hispanic Americans through
community-based programs operating at more than
700 LULAC councils nationwide.
