National President, Rosa Rosales, made the
following statement following a conference call
today on the US Air Force’s consideration of the
European Aeronautical Defense & Space (EADS)
Company’s bid for their $40 billion aerial
refueling “tanker” program. Not only would this
mean the outsourcing of over 40,000 American
jobs, but EADS is a company plagued with reports
of insider trading and accepting illegal
subsidies:
“The Latino community and all
U.S. workers should be able to trust their
government to buy American and not outsource
jobs to foreign corporations that engage in
illegal business practices. In light of these
actions, it’s quite difficult to fathom how
Airbus CEO Allan McErtor plans to bring economic
growth and job opportunities to our country when
his parent company EADS is planning to siphon
tens of thousands of high-skilled, well-paid
American jobs to Airbus/EADS plants across
Europe.”
“The aerial refueling ‘tanker’
program would provide over 44,000 US jobs and is
valued at $40 billion. These opportunities for
US workers could help to build and revive Latino
communities across the nation. These jobs should
not be outsourced to EADS, a company that is
under investigation by the US Justice Department
for bribery, the French and German authorities
for insider trading by some of their executives,
and being sued by the US Trade Representative in
the largest-ever legal action in the history of
the World Trade Organization.
“We hope that our government
will stand up for American workers and against
outlaw companies that engage in illegal
activities by rejecting this bid by EADS to
outsource American jobs overseas.”
The League of United Latin
American Citizens, the largest and oldest
Hispanic membership organization in the country,
advances the economic conditions, educational
attainment, political influence, health and
civil rights of Hispanic Americans through
community-based programs operating at more than
700 LULAC councils nationwide.
