								Washington, DC – The
League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC)
is calling for all individuals to refrain from
purchasing consumer products on May 1st
to give a taste of the economic impact of Latino
								immigrant purchasing capacity and its
withdrawal. LULAC is also asking for the
community to take part in local activities
throughout the nation ranging from voter
registration and education drives to “A Day with
the Family” outings, and mass candlelight
								vigils.
								“We are asking individuals to
keep from spending a penny on that day," said
LULAC National President Hector M. Flores, “We
also are asking students to stay in school on
that day and not make any purchases. We do not
want children out of school or people missing
work without permission from their employers. We
ask that people be disciplined and responsible
and to show our respect yet make a clear
								statement.”
								May 1st is International
Workers’ Day and LULAC is asking for employers
to show support of their employees by calling on
their Members of Congress and Senators
expressing opposition to HR 4437 and expressing
how important their worker’s contributions are
and the value placed on their employees.
								International Workers’ Day,
commemorates the historic struggle of working
people throughout the world, and is recognized
in every country except the United States,
Canada, and South Africa. The holiday began in
the 1880’s in the United States, with the fight
								for an eight-hour work day.
								“These are people that are
working hard for our nation. They are picking
our food. They are building our homes. They are
taking care of our children. They are cleaning
our offices. And all they want is the same
opportunity that your ancestors and my ancestors
had,” LULAC Executive Director Brent Wilkes
								said.
