LATINOS FOR A SECURE RETIREMENT
National and Local Community Leaders Convene in San Antonio,
Texas to debate Social Security
March 21, 2005
On Wednesday, March 23 at 4:30pm, LCLAA
and LULAC will be joined by national and local
community leaders to debate the issue of Latinos
and Social Security. The Town Hall Meeting is
one of a series of Town Halls hosted by
Latinos For A Secure Retirement, a national
coalition that brings together Labor, Advocacy
and Retirement Organizations to ensure that the
varied voices of the Latino community are
represented in the debate.
Social Security
is our nation’s most important family protection
program.
It is a critical safety net that should
be strengthened through careful and thoughtful
reform, not destroyed. Carving out private
accounts from the current Trust Fund will weaken
retirement security by forcing cuts in
guaranteed benefits for all workers
damaging the safety net that many
families depend on. Latinos in particular would
be amongst the most affected if Social Security
were privatized because 41 percent of Latino
retirees rely on Social Security benefits for
their only source of income. Social Security was
created to protect workers and their families at
all stages of their life.
