								Washington, DC—The
League of United Latin American Citizens is
calling upon President Bush to nominate Attorney
General Alberto Gonzales as the next justice for
the U.S. Supreme Court following the decision by
Harriet Miers to withdraw her nomination.  LULAC
								believes that Gonzalez’s outstanding
								qualifications, experience and judicial
temperament make him the most eminently
qualified candidate to serve on the court.
								“LULAC has worked with
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales for the past
15 years, and we have been impressed with his
integrity, his judicial acumen and the decisions
he has rendered throughout his legal career,”
stated LULAC National President Hector Flores.
“We have supported him each time he has been
nominated for a legal appointment and most
recently when he was nominated as the first
Hispanic U.S. Attorney General by President
George W. Bush. Like retiring Justice Sandra Day
O'Conner, Gonzales is the American Dream
personified—the child of immigrant parents who
believe in the ideals of this great country.”
								Attorney General Gonzalez is
an extremely qualified jurist who has served
with distinction on the Texas Supreme Court.  He
received the best education America has to
offer—Rice University and Harvard School of
Law.  Moreover, he has demonstrated a keen
understanding of the law and how it is applied
to everyday American life—representing the core
values of American society that is inclusive of
								everyone.
								“America and great societies
are measured by the way they treat the
								disadvantaged, the defenseless, and the
voiceless, and how the laws of the land are
applied to all,” stated LULAC Legal Advisor Ray
Velarde. “Attorney General Gonzales will be a
fair-minded jurist who will apply the law in
keeping with our great American traditions and
review each case on its merits.”
								The League of United Latin
American Citizens (LULAC) is the oldest and
largest Latino civil rights organization in the
United States.  LULAC advances the economic
								condition, educational attainment, political
influence, health, and civil rights of Hispanic
								Americans through community-based programs
operating at more than 700 LULAC councils
								nationwide.
