Washington, DC – The
National Assembly of the League of United Latin
American Citizens (LULAC) has urged
Governor-elect Jon Corzine to appoint U.S.
Representative Robert Menendez as his
replacement for the U.S. Senate. Menendez is
the third-ranking Democrat in the House of
Representatives, serving as the chair of his
party’s caucus.
Menendez has had a long and
distinguished political career, which includes
serving as a school board member, mayor,
assemblyman, state senator and chairman of the
House Democratic caucus. LULAC is confident
Menendez will make an outstanding U.S. Senator
who will continue to make sound decisions on
behalf of his constituency, which take into
account the positions of LULAC and other civil
rights organizations.
LULAC organizational leaders
noted the great significance of having a Latino
confirmed to the U.S. Senate. “Bob Menendez is
a wonderful example of the American Dream. He
rose from humble beginnings and now has the
serious potential of being confirmed as the
first Hispanic U.S. Senator from New Jersey,”
said Hector Flores, LULAC National President.
Flores continued: “Bob
Menendez is a dynamic, intelligent and eloquent
leader of tremendous integrity. His appointment
to fill John Corzine’s Senate seat would be a
great benefit to New Jersey, the U.S. Senate and
the Hispanic community.”
The League of the United Latin
American Citizen (www.lulac.org)
advances the economic conditions, educational
attainment, political influence, health and
civil rights of Hispanic Americans through
community-based programs operating at more than
700 LULAC councils nationwide.
