Washington, DC - Secretary of State Colin Powell's efforts to regularize the status of immigrant workers and increase diversity at the State Department have earned him top honors from the League of United Latin American Citizens, who will present him with the LULAC National Legislative Award at their fifth annual gala on March 13, 2002. Senator Joseph Lieberman's central role in expanding educational opportunities for Hispanics and Congressman Silvestre Reyes' strong leadership as chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus will also be recognized at the black-tie event.
"Each year, LULAC honors those individuals who have led the fight of opportunity for Hispanic Americans," said Rick Dovalina, LULAC National President. "This year we are proud to recognize three very distinguished and accomplished individuals for their dedication to the mission of LULAC."
The strong growth in the Hispanic population coupled with rising Hispanic political power has made the LULAC Legislative Award one of the most coveted awards in the political arena. The LULAC National Board of Directors selects just two Legislative Award recipients each year, and the LULAC President selects just one recipient of the President's award. The awards gala was established five years ago to recognize those individuals who have been most supportive of the Hispanic communities' legislative priorities
Ford Motor Company will serve as this year's Gala Chair. Latina actress and comedienne Jackie Guerra will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies. Members of Congress, foreign ambassadors, administration officials, and other celebrities are expected to attend. The event will be held at the J.W. Marriott in downtown Washington, DC.
The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) is the oldest and largest Latino civil rights organization in the United States. LULAC advances the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, health, and civil rights of Hispanic Americans through community-based programs operating at more than 700 LULAC councils nationwide.
