Resolution
WHEREAS THE LEAGUE OF UNITED LATIN AMERICAN CITIZENS (LULAC) advances the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, health and civil rights of Hispanics in the United States; and,
WHEREAS, the LULAC Constitution states that the organization aims "to combat all un-American tendencies and actions that deprive American citizens of their rights in educational institutions, in economic pursuit and in social, civic and political activities;" and,
WHEREAS, in appreciation of the tremendous contributions of Puerto Ricans in the fields of arts, science, medicine, culture, business, literature and sports which have enriched the U.S; and
WHEREAS, In the knowledge that Puerto Ricans have shed their blood to defend the nation of the Untied States, but cannot elect its President or federal legislators; and
WHEREAS, Don Feder's article "No statehood for Caribbean Dogpatch" published by the Boston Herald on 11/30/98, was inaccurate and racially offensive not only to Puerto Ricans, but to the entire Hispanic community;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the LULAC National Executive Committee, having met in San Juan, Puerto Rico on the 13th day of December, 1998, demands the following:
1) A specific and sincere apology from Don Feder to be printed prominently in the Boston Herald.
2) The appointment of a Hispanic Advisory Committee that will monitor the paper's involvement with the Hispanic community with respect to employment, philanthropy, governance, contracting and journalism.
3) The establishment of an internship program for Hispanic journalists at the Boston Herald.
Furthermore, be it resolved that should the Boston Herald fail to agree to the above conditions by January 2, 1999 and fully implement the same by March 1, 1999; LULAC will engage in the following actions until such time that the paper does meet our conditions:
1) A boycott against the Boston Herald urging people not to purchase the paper and current subscribers to cancel their subscriptions.
2) A boycott against any company that advertises products or services in the Boston Herald and does not discontinue their advertisements within 30 days of receiving notice of our intent to boycott.
3) A boycott against any retailer that sells the Boston Herald and continues to do so within 30 days of receiving notice of our intent to boycott.
