June 2, 2009 Last Tuesday, President Obama nominated Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the United States Supreme Court. Judge Sotomayor is a qualified nominee with a sharp and independent mind. Over the last three decades, Judge Sotomayor has worked as a prosecutor, litigator, trial court and appellate judge, exhibiting a breadth of experience beyond that of any Supreme Court Justice in the last 100 years. She brings to the court an understanding of how laws impact the realities of peoples’ lives. If confirmed, Judge Sotomayor will be the first Latina to ever join the high court. This would be a landmark achievement for the Latino community and for all Americans who value diversity in the courts. Judge Sotomayor’s confirmation would make the Supreme Court more representative of the American population. On behalf of the League of United Latin American Citizens, the nation’s largest and oldest Latino organization, I urge you to call your senators in support of bringing her nomination to a full vote in the Senate without delay. -- Rosa Rosales, National President, League of United Latin American Citizens # # # |
